It is time to renew your annual membership! From now until the end of the year I will be taking renewals - only $25.00.

I’ll be taking membership renewals at our last show of the year in Tucson. I hope to see you there. If you are not able to attend please mail in your renewal while you are thinking about it to avoid a late fee and or a lapse in membership. J

If you aren’t able to pick up a 2006 show calendar at a show, you can print one on our website www.azarms.com.

I think I speak for everyone when I say we had a great Antique Arms Show November 12 & 13th at Mesa Centennial Hall. This premier show turned out some long-time and not often seen club members who showed up and/or exhibited at this show, expressing that they wanted to participate in this special event. Many exhibitors traveled from Texas, California and New Mexico. By show's end it was already 75% sold out for next year... and it promises to be bigger and better yet!

Other arms collectors clubs also participated. The Arizona Society of Arms Collectors were there, as well as the Arizona Knife Collectors Association and the Santa Barbara Historical Arms Association.

On Saturday, in honor of our Veteran's, a bagpiper was present and played for us all. Member Bob Sachs dressed in vintage 1880's Colonel's uniform carried the American flag.

We had 10 arms displays. Cash awards and First, Second, Third Place and "People's Choice" plaque awards were given away. Winners were as follows:

Bill Venemon won $50.00 and the 3rd place for his display titled Winchester Classics.

2nd place and the $75.00 prize was given to Bob Sachs for his elaborate Winchester display titled THE GUN THAT WON THE WEST.

First place and $100.00 was awarded to Jim Janke for BOY'S SINGLE SHOT RIFLES.

Every person who came in the door on Saturday received a ballot to vote for their favorite display - the People's Choice Award. A check for $125.00 and the award went to Bob Sachs for his Winchester display titled THE GUN THAT WON THE WEST!

A very close runner up for the People's Choice Award went to Larry Kaufman of the Arizona Society of Arms Collectors for his display titled COLT SINGLE ACTIONS 1874-1938. Of special merit in that display was a .44 rimfire single action Army, serial number 250.

All the displays should have won an award. each and every one of them were excellent. A complete list follows:

The Gun that Won the West - Bob & Janis Sachs

Colt Pocket Positive Grip Inspection Jig - Bill Rudich

 • E. Remington & Sons and American Rimfire Cartridges - Don Sandefur

 • A Few .22 LR Single Shot Target Pistols (Featuring Colt Camp Perry and Smith & Wesson Single Shot Pistols) - Larry Timmer

 • COLT SINGLE ACTIONS 1874-1938 - Larry Kaufman

 • 45 IN Service - Bruce Kaufman

 • BOY'S SINGLE SHOT RIFLES - Jim Janke

 • Winchester Classics - Bill Venemon

 • EARLY DAYS OF LINCOLN COUNTY - Rod Smith

 • A SAMPLE OF GUNS AS FOUND IN THE OLD WEST - Harry L. Viezens

I'd like to express our sincere thanks our 3 judges (all members of the AAA). They told me how hard the job was.

From Bill Rudich: I want to thank all the exhibitors of the antique arms show for your participation - you made it a success! To the board for supporting the project - Peggy and Cindy for your hard work, Mark Stewart for his help and patience and all the rest of the show staff/security, headed by Roger King and Tim Proffer Jr..

As promised, the date for the Santa Barbara Historical Arms and Blade show is February 18-19, 2006 at the Earl Warren Fairgrounds. Visit their website at http://www.sbhaa.org/  or call Paul to reserve a table at (661) 299-6436.

Wishing our members Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving 1621

The following is a fairly complete list of the foods available to the Pilgrims during the three-day Thanksgiving harvest celebration, although the only foods specifically mentioned by the Pilgrims are: "corn" (wheat, by the Pilgrims usage of the word), Indian corn, barley, peas (if any where spared), "fowl" (Bradford says "waterfowl"), five deer, fish (namely bass and cod), and wild turkey.

FISH: cod, bass, herring, shad, bluefish, and lots of eel.

SEAFOOD: clams, lobsters, mussels, and very small quantities of oysters

BIRDS: wild turkey, goose, duck, crane, swan, partridge, and other miscellaneous waterfowl; they were also known to have occasionally eaten eagles (which "tasted like mutton" according to Winslow in 1623.)

OTHER MEAT: venison (deer), possibly some salt pork or chicken.

GRAIN: wheat flour, Indian corn and corn meal; barley (mainly for beer-making).

FRUITS: raspberries, strawberries, grapes, plums, cherries, blueberries, gooseberries (these would have been dried, as none would have been in season).

VEGETABLES: small quantity of peas, squashes (including pumpkins), beans

NUTS: walnuts, chestnuts, acorns, hickory nuts, ground nuts

HERBS and SEASONINGS: onions, leeks, strawberry leaves, currants, sorrel, yarrow, carvel, brooklime, liverwort, watercress, and flax; from England they brought seeds and probably planted radishes, lettuce, carrots, onions, and cabbage. Olive oil in small quantities may have been brought over.

OTHER: maple syrup, honey; small quantities of butter, Holland cheese; and eggs.

Cowboy Humor

Walking through Tombstone, a cowboy sees a building with the sign, "Hans Olaffsen's Chinese Laundry."

"Hans Olaffsen?", he muses. "How the heck does that fit in here?"

So he walks into the shop and sees an old Chinese gentleman behind the counter.

The cowboy asks, "How did this place get a name like "Hans Olaffsen's Chinese Laundry?"

The old man answers, "Is name of owner."

The cowboy asks, "Well, who and where is the owner?"

"Me, is right here," replies the old man.

"You? How did you ever get a name like Hans Olaffsen?"

"Is simple," says the old man. "Many, many year ago when come to this country, was stand in line at
Documentation Center. Man in front was big blonde Swede. Lady look at him and go, "What your name?" He say, "Hans Olaffsen." then she look at me and go, 'What your name?'"

"I say, Sem Ting."

Quote:

"In England...A large proportion of the most valuable of the provisions in Magna Charta, and the bill of rights in 1688, consists of a solemn recognition, of limitations upon the power of parliament; that is, a declaration, that parliament ought not to abolish, or restrict those rights. Such are the right of trial by jury; the right to personal liberty and private property according to the law of the land; that the subjects ought to have a right to bear arms... " Joseph Story, Dane Professor of Law in Harvard University, Commentaries on the Constitution of the United States (1833), Book III at 718, § 1858

Wild Turkey

The wild turkey is the largest of North America's game birds.

Adult males, known as toms, or gobblers, normally weigh between 16 and 24 pounds.

Females, known as hens, are smaller than males and usually weigh between 8 and ten pounds.

(Females feathers are) drab, usually brown or gray. They make great camouflage and hide the hens when they sit on their nests.

The largest wild turkey on record weighed 37 pounds.

Wild turkey tails are usually 12 to 15 inches long and are banded at their tips. The color of the bands in the tail varies by subspecies.

Male wild turkeys fan their tails when displaying to attract a mate.

µ   Attention Arizonans, From NRA-ILA:

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) comment period regarding the management of the Lake Havasu Resource Management Plan (RMP) in Arizona is currently open. This plan affects 1.3 million acres of BLM-Administered lands in La Paz and Mohave counties in western Arizona. Please act now to make your views known regarding hunter access issues.

In the past, anti-hunters have been very active during public comment periods in Arizona. In order to protect hunting access in Arizona, hunters must make their voices heard. You should contact the
BLM and ask them to assure that access for hunters to BLM land be part of the plan, also let them know that you support the use of BLM land for recreational shooting and hunting. Let them know that neither activity should be restricted by the plan. Further, the plan should allow for the proactive management of game species to assure that we will be able to hunt well into the future.

µ Yuma police begin accessing eTrace, a database established by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). "It's an excellent investigative tool," Nicolette said.

Detective Ross Nicolette,
Yuma Police Dept. spearheaded the effort to give YPD access to the database. On Sept. 21, the Yuma City Council passed a motion that authorized the first interagency agreement between ATF and YPD.

"It will start to identify some of the straw purchasers," he said.

A straw purchaser is a person who buys a gun for a person who cannot, such as a convicted felon. The straw purchaser sells the gun at a premium price to the prohibited possessor.

According to state law, purchasing a weapon for a prohibited possessor is misconduct with weapons, a Class 6 felony that is punishable by one year in prison for a first offense.

Norred said the efficiency of eTrace should be a step up for the department. "It cuts through the red tape," he said.

µ S.B. 357, The bill that protects Firearm Manufacturers from Junk Lawsuits has finally passed and is on it's way to the President's Desk where he has said he will sign it.

Thanks in big part to the NRA and all the voting gun owners who contacted their Congressmen and Senators - this bill will stop cities from blaming Firearm Manfacturers from being sued over the wrongful deeds of others, such as the criminal use of firearms. It puts the responsibility back on the criminal or individual where it belongs. It will not shield companies from making a bad or defective product.
